Learn to row
Ready to master the water? Discover the joys of rowing with our Learn to Row course. Warrington Rowing Club runs 2 programs designed for both adult and junior beginners, we offer expert coaching and a complete training program, teaching indoor rowing (ergo) and skulling (2 oar rowing). Upon completion of the course you will then be invited to join one of our rowing squads.
What does the course cost? - £120.

How long is the course? - 6 weeks.
The course consists of a single 2 hour session a week. This is traditionally on a Sunday morning, although it is subject to change based on coach & volunteer availability.

When is the course held? -
We typically run 3 Learn To Row courses a year in the Spring, Summer, and Autumn. Although if there is a large amount of interest we may be able to put on additional courses. So if you have a number of friends all looking to start together, please reach out and we'll see what we can do.

Requirements -
While we try to make rowing as accessible as possible, there are a few thresholds that each applicant must be able to reach:
-
Over 18 years old (we have a separate juniors program for younger people)
-
Ability to swim at least 50 meters in light sports clothing
-
Ability to tread water for at least two minutes
-
Ability to swim under water for at least 5 meters
-
Good general health
What should you expect from the course? -
The course will introduce you to rowing indoors on a rowing machine (ergo), where you will develop the technique needed in the boat. This technique will then be put into practice on the water, where the rowing (sculling – two oars each) technique will be further developed.
The courses are taught in Explore rowing boats, which are more stable / balanced than the fine competitive boats, they are perfect for developing the technique and skills without the worry of falling in.
By the end of the course you should be able to row 5km competently and with confidence.

What happens next? -
After finishing the Learn To Row course you will be eligible to join our any of our squads. Masters or Seniors for those wishing to pursue rowing competitively. Alternatively there is the Development Squad for those looking to keep things more recreational or who wish to spend more time honing their skills.

While we would love for you to continue rowing at Warrington, the skills you learn will allow you to join any of the hundreds of rowing clubs across the country.

*We are also always on the lookout for coxes, so if you think you would be more suited to learning to cox, please to get in contact.*
Who can apply? -
We follow school age grouping with our juniors so prefer to take on children when they are in year 7 (11-12 years old). If under-subscribed then the course will be opened up to older children, so it is worth expressing an interest no matter which secondary school year you are in, up to year 10 (14-15 years old).

When is the course held? -
We normally have a new intake for children in May/June each year, with typically 2-3 water / gym sessions each week, up to the start of the school summer holidays.

You will further hone your skills and fitness in the gym, where you will take part in circuit training and rowing machine exercises.

What happens next? -
Those "year 7s" aged 11-12 will typically form our new “J13” junior squad at the start of the following school year. Older children would be considered for assignment to one of our existing junior squads, but places are typically very limited and are therefore selective based on ability and prior attendance.
